The first Thanksgiving in 1621 was about expressing gratitude for an abundant harvest. The Pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians shared a three-day feast that included some surprising entrees, such as lobster, clams, and venison – but according to accounts, probably no turkey! However, the bird earned the dubious honor of being the holiday meal fairly early on, as by the late 1700’s – even before Thanksgiving was an official holiday – the turkey was already the meal of choice. Today, it is estimated that 88% of us will eat turkey on Thanksgiving, representing 46 million birds. Some of the traditional menu items that did descend from that first meal were fruit, cranberries, and pumpkins, although they were likely roasted and not made into sauces and pies.

Pumpkin Spice

Two of the most beloved traditions of Thanksgiving, after the meal, are the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and watching football. The parade was the brainchild of immigrants who worked for Macy’s and wanted to find a creative way to celebrate their new home. The first parade took place in 1924, and the first iconic balloon – Felix the Cat – took to the air in 1927.  In 1934, the Detroit Lions played the first official Thanksgiving Day game in an attempt to gain some new fans. The Lions have not missed a Thanksgiving Day since. In 1966, the Dallas Cowboys followed suit, and those two teams are always guaranteed to play on the holiday. (The NFL added a third, evening game in 2006, but participating teams rotate year to year).
